The Cervical Denneroll Orthotic Device is a simple, yet complex, pillow-like device engineered with curves, angles, and ridges extrapolated from the CBP evidence based cervical spinal model. With simple training and education, you can instruct your patients to properly position the Cervical Denneroll device for low-stress, comfortable mirror-image traction (spinal remodeling) treatments at home.
If you suffer from forward head posture, a straightened neck, or headaches, ask one of the doctor’s in the office if the Cervical Denneroll could help you!

The Best Gift of All

The Black Friday deals are done, Cyber Monday is behind us, and we are beginning to dust off grandmother’s classic cookie recipes to bake as gifts to friends, co-workers and loved ones. Store fronts display quaint Christmas scenes and “White Christmas” is playing everywhere we go. One thing is for sure: it’s officially the holiday season!

It is easy to get whipped up into a holiday frenzy as you chase the cheapest sales and fight the crowds at the most popular stores determined to check everyone off your list. Before you know it, you’re packing your trunk full of holiday gifts and goodies and over the mountain and through the woods you go to visit your family. By the time you leave, you may find yourself exhausted and silently thinking “Thank goodness this is over!” We all know that the holiday season holds much greater value than tasty cookies and chasing discounts, so how do we capture the holiday season for all that it is designed to be?  The answer is simple and doesn’t cost a penny: giving your time.
We are surrounded by people and organizations in our communities that are truly in need this holiday season. By donating even just an hour of your time, you can make an incredible, meaningful and direct impact on the life of another person. It doesn’t take much, just a heart that desires to give.  Do some research and find a cause that is meaningful to you.  Carve out a slice of your personal time to give and you’ll be amazed just how much it really begins to feel like the holiday season.

BUT, the BEST gift of all is referring a friend to our office here at Family First and showing them what a life of full potential can look like when they start getting their adjustments. Do you know someone that has habitual headaches, or is constantly complaining of neck or back pain? Sure, you do! They are the perfect candidate to come see us!

Let this year be the year that you begin to give back to the needy in your community and by showing your friends/family what it’s truly like to live in total health freedom.

November Chiropatients of the Month

Isabela started coming to Family First a little over 6 months ago with her mom who was concerned about her recurring ear infections, fevers, and acid reflux. Hoping to find some relief from her symptoms, Isabela’s mom makes sure she keeps all her appointments and continues to recognize all of the progress Isabela is making with her chiropractic care!

Maria has been a loyal Family First patient for over five years. She originally came to see us with neck and back pain and stiffness. Maria continues to get adjusted because she understands and appreciates the benefits of chiropractic care for wellness and maintenance.

Gearing up for Back to School

Back pain is pervasive among American adults, however it is not uncommon among children and teens either. In a new and disturbing trend, young children are suffering from back pain much earlier than previous generations, and the use of overweight backpacks is a contributing factor, according to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA). In fact, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has previously reported that backpack-related injuries sent more than 7,000 people to the emergency room in one year’s time.

What Can You Do To Help Prevent This?
ACA offers the following tips to help prevent the needless pain that backpack misuse could cause the students in your household.

  • Make sure your child’s backpack weighs no more than 5 to 10 percent of his or her body weight. A heavier backpack will cause your child to bend forward in an attempt to support the weight on his or her back, rather than on the shoulders, by the straps.
  • The backpack should never hang more than four inches below the waistline. A backpack that hangs too low increases the weight on the shoulders, causing your child to lean forward when walking.
  • Urge your child to wear both shoulder straps. Lugging the backpack around by one strap can cause the disproportionate shift of weight to one side, leading to neck and muscle spasms, as well as low-back pain.
  • Wide, padded straps are very important. Non-padded straps are uncomfortable, and can dig into your child’s shoulders.
  • The shoulder straps should be adjustable so the backpack can be fitted to your child’s body. Straps that are too loose can cause the backpack to dangle uncomfortably and cause spinal misalignment and pain.
  • If the backpack is still too heavy, talk to your child’s teacher. Ask if your child could leave the heaviest books at school, and bring home only lighter hand-out materials or workbooks.
  • Although the use of rollerpacks – or backpacks on wheels – has become popular in recent years, ACA is now recommending that they be used cautiously and on a limited basis by only those students who are not physically able to carry a backpack. Some school districts have begun banning the use of rollerpacks because they clutter hallways, resulting in dangerous trips and falls.

What Does Freedom Mean to You?

This month we celebrate our freedom as a nation and all that it stands for which is wonderful. Freedom is defined as the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.

That leads to the question, “What does freedom mean to you regarding your health – financially, physically, spiritually, or mentally?”

Does that mean for you and your family:

  • Debts paid off
  • A new weight loss journey
  • Boosting your immune system through chiropractic care
  • Getting toxins out of your home
  • Having a time of daily meditation or prayer
  • Saving money for a new home, car, or vacation
  • Being more thankful in your daily life

That leads to the next questions, “How will you get that freedom you desire? How will you live life differently once you reach that freedom?”

Here’s some tips to help you get there:

  1. Make a vision board with your goals in mind
  2. Have small goals to complete first
  3. Target one area at a time
  4. Once that goal is completed, celebrate your freedom in that area by doing something meaningful to you

Do you have any other tips you would like to share with us or what areas you are seeking freedom in? We would love to hear from you and support you in any way that we can!

June Chiropatients of the Month

Betty and Fran are dear sisters that have been patients at Family First for years! They bring such a spark into the office when they come in: always positive, ready for their adjustment and therapies, and also they enjoy coming to our classes that we offer monthly. They are always ready to better their health and in any way that they can. We are thankful for you two sweet ladies and so glad you cherish your weekly chiropractic adjustments!

We are so glad that Kyra is a patient at our office. As a growing teen, her body is making many changes from growth spurts to mental developments and her adjustments are very important to her body. We are thankful that her parents are also patients and see the value in getting their daughter adjusted regularly.

Mental Health and Chiropractic

Most often people associate chiropractic care with aches and pains of daily life or a chronic nagging pain that they need relief from. Chiropractic care is so much more than that. Since May is Mental Health Awareness Month, we wanted to show you how chiropractic plays a large role in keeping our mind sharp and as healthy as possible.

Decreases Mind-Clouding Pain

One reason that chiropractic care can help mental health is by decreasing any physical pain that may be clouding the mind. As anyone with chronic pain can attest to, this discomfort can have a serious impact on mood and mental health. As the spine becomes aligned and pain decreases, anxiety and depression sprouting from pain are proven to lessen throughout treatment.

Decreases Chronic Pain, a Common Cause of Depression

When chronic pain is a part of your daily life, not only is it hard to focus but suddenly you are no longer feeling well enough to be social and take part in activities you once loved. Studies have proven that depression occurs at a rate of three to four times higher in those with chronic pain when compared to their healthier peers. The cycle of chronic pain and depression can continue on and on unless it is broken. Regular chiropractic adjustments have proven to decrease pain, depression and anxiety and allow for a healthier (mentally and physically) existence.

Changes Misalignments Which Impact the Nervous System

Our moods are regulated by our body’s chemistry. This chemistry in your organs as well as your brain is all regulated by the nervous system. Misalignment of the spine (specifically the first, second or third vertebrae) can cause pressure in the area of the brain steam which can cause interference neurologically and chemically.  Often people turn to medications that are used to alter their brain chemistry but those looking for a non-medication therapy often find that re-aligning these vertebrae can do wonders for their mental state.

Germs + Chiropractic = Healthier Childhood

germsThere’s a growing body of research showing that children exposed to lots of germs early in life are less likely to develop allergies, asthma or autoimmune disorders as they grow up.

A recent study done in the Journal Science shows that exposure to microbes during early childhood is associated with protection from immune-mediated diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and asthma. The reason being that when these microbes enter the gut they keep a rare part of the immune system reined in. When there are NO microbes present, the immune cells run rampant in the lungs and intestines, increasing the risk of asthma and colitis. Add in the microbes, and cells in question, invariant natural killer T cells, retreat.

In other words, exposure to common germs keeps the immune system properly functioning and busy and able to not over-react when encountering nasty bugs and other biological stuff later in life. We are meant to encounter some microbes and dirt when we are young. It’s how our immune system grows strong.

In addition, there’s evidence that children who are given antibiotics early in life are more likely to have immune-based problems like asthma and food allergies. There’s even some evidence that women might have more autoimmune diseases than men because they’re kept cleaner than boys as children.

Chiropractic Adjustments & Your Immune System

We’ve talked before about the things you can do to boost your immune system naturally (besides getting dirty). These include eating simply and nutritiously (avoiding sugar), getting plenty of rest, taking the right whole food supplements, and getting adjusted. The same is true for our children. Regular chiropractic check-ups can help ensure that your child’s spine and nervous system are developing normally. Research has also shown that chiropractic care boosts the immune system. A holistic approach for children including chiropractic, good nutrition and play (exposure to germs), and mindfulness for reducing stress, may not only help with their immune system but also bring more energy and vitality into their life!
