Make an Impact in 2018

We have all seen the articles that pop up this time of year all themed around “New Year Resolutions” or “How to be healthier in 2018.” We will save you all the fluff and really get down to the bulleted version of how to make the most impact! These three steps will make sure you are informed and empowered to create that person you see yourself being in 2018 and beyond.

1. Eat Clean

Notice we didn’t say eat “better” or “Paleo” or “never have sugar” or anything like that. The truth is, it takes time and repetition to learn and get better at everything in life. The way we eat is no different. Start with the good and eventually we stop craving the bad. Don’t beat yourself up if you get off track and focus on how you feel when you nourish your body with good food. Focus on being healthy, strong and having energy to be the best version of yourself versus what a scale says back to you.

So we’ve found by far the most effective, health-enhancing starting point for our patients in this toxic,
chemical-laced, American diet is to just clean it up! If you can’t pronounce it, don’t eat it. If its list of
ingredients goes beyond more than a few things items, don’t eat it…! If it can sit on the shelf for 4 years and still be “edible” then it’s not really edible. Make clean choices!

2. Move Often

Movement is life, our bodies and nervous systems need motion to thrive! You need to find the physical activity that you love. If you are not a runner at heart, don’t run. If you despise going to hot-yoga, don’t do hot-yoga. You need to find what is best for yourself so you stay motivated to continue moving. When you figure out what you love to do it becomes a part of your everyday routine, without having to talk yourself into getting to the gym. Get inspired with your exercise routines and do them often!

3. Minimize Stress and Be Happy

We live in a more stressful, busy, toxic world and our bodies and nervous systems undergo a lot of stress. This aspect can be the one that is the hardest to release or change and typically is the aspect that needs the most focus and attention to combat! Being able to limit your stressors and adapt to them more efficiently is going to be the single most impactful change for 2018.

Regular chiropractic care optimizes your body’s ability to function, and keeps your nervous system humming along at a high level. Patients under regular chiropractic care tend to get sick less often, and get over it a lot quicker when they do. Plus they regularly report improved energy levels and mood, more flexibility, and a better ability to adapt to stress. Just like your diet, cut out the “toxicity” and clean it up. If your workplace is toxic, change jobs… if your friends are toxic, change friends… If your schedule is toxic, change it. You are in charge, make it happen!

If we can convey any message to you this year, make it about yourself. Empower yourself to be in control of 2018! Take these first couple days to truly look inside and see where your heart lies. If you find the things you love, you will have no trouble implementing them and therefore will have your best year yet!

December Chiropatients

She has been coming consistently for 2 years and has attended EVERY single stretch class on Thursday night since we started them. She’s feeling better and better each day. She always has a positive attitude when she comes in for her adjustment and participates in her health and garden club!

 

 

 

Henry has been a patient since July 2017 and is 12 years old. He comes in with his dad who understands the importance of chiropractic care for Henry to be able to competitively participate in MMA fighting and wrestling. He originally came in for low back pain that was affecting his ability to exercise and practice. Since starting care, Henry is feeling the benefits of regular chiropractic care and staying active like a healthy child should!

The Best Gift of All

The Black Friday deals are done, Cyber Monday is behind us, and we are beginning to dust off grandmother’s classic cookie recipes to bake as gifts to friends, co-workers and loved ones. Store fronts display quaint Christmas scenes and “White Christmas” is playing everywhere we go. One thing is for sure: it’s officially the holiday season!

It is easy to get whipped up into a holiday frenzy as you chase the cheapest sales and fight the crowds at the most popular stores determined to check everyone off your list. Before you know it, you’re packing your trunk full of holiday gifts and goodies and over the mountain and through the woods you go to visit your family. By the time you leave, you may find yourself exhausted and silently thinking “Thank goodness this is over!” We all know that the holiday season holds much greater value than tasty cookies and chasing discounts, so how do we capture the holiday season for all that it is designed to be?  The answer is simple and doesn’t cost a penny: giving your time.
We are surrounded by people and organizations in our communities that are truly in need this holiday season. By donating even just an hour of your time, you can make an incredible, meaningful and direct impact on the life of another person. It doesn’t take much, just a heart that desires to give.  Do some research and find a cause that is meaningful to you.  Carve out a slice of your personal time to give and you’ll be amazed just how much it really begins to feel like the holiday season.

BUT, the BEST gift of all is referring a friend to our office here at Family First and showing them what a life of full potential can look like when they start getting their adjustments. Do you know someone that has habitual headaches, or is constantly complaining of neck or back pain? Sure, you do! They are the perfect candidate to come see us!

November Chiropatients of the Month

Isabela started coming to Family First a little over 6 months ago with her mom who was concerned about her recurring ear infections, fevers, and acid reflux. Hoping to find some relief from her symptoms, Isabela’s mom makes sure she keeps all her appointments and continues to recognize all of the progress Isabela is making with her chiropractic care!

 

Maria has been a loyal Family First patient for over five years. She originally came to see us with neck and back pain and stiffness. Maria continues to get adjusted because she understands and appreciates the benefits of chiropractic care for wellness and maintenance.

A Healthier Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is the holiday for giving thanks for what we have, spending time with friends and family.  But it’s also the holiday often associated with excessive amounts of food!  Everyone knows that a Thanksgiving meal is often laden with sugary and carb-loaded goodies and many overindulge and consume more in this one meal than they normally do in a whole day.  But have you ever noticed how you feel after this extravagant meal?  Most feel groggy and tired and maybe so full you feel sick.  Yes, it’s fine to splurge on holiday foods, but making a few healthy changes to your Thanksgiving routine could mean you’ll feel better and more Thankful in the end!

Here are some helpful healthy Thanksgiving Day tips!

Eat breakfast: Breakfast is often called the “most important meal of the day.”  This is especially true on Thanksgiving!  It may seem counterproductive to eat a hearty breakfast before a large Thanksgiving feast, but eating something in the morning can help you keep portions smaller at the big meal.  Breakfast will also keep you energized enough to get kitchen task done and entertain your guests. Try having some scrambled eggs, a small omelet with veggies, or fruit with greek yogurt.  The protein will keep you full all morning and keep you from feeling ravenous once dinner is served.

Get off the couch: No you don’t have to work off every morsel you eat!  But keeping in mind that the typical Thanksgiving meal weighs in at about 3,000 calories you may want to incorporate some physical activity to your day to avoid weight gain.  Even just a short 10 minute walk before and after the meal not only wards of winter pounds but boosts your energy and confidence levels!

Try some healthy alternatives: We all have our favorite traditional holiday dishes that we are reluctant to change.  You don’t have to change all your dishes to healthier alternatives, but try substituting healthier options in a few side dishes.  Maybe have mashed cauliflower instead of mashed potatoes this year.  Or try making your own mushroom cream soup for the green bean casserole instead of the processed canned soup version.

October Chiropatients of the Month

Megan has been a patient at Family First for almost 6 months. She always comes in smiling and laughing. Megan does her recommended exercises with enthusiasm and is already seeing major improvements in her spinal health. She loves the chiropractic care she’s receiving and refers all of her family and friends!

 

 

 

Samuel comes in with his Mom, who is an advocate of chiropractic care and its benefits. He came in initially with no symptoms, but understands the importance of chiropractic as a preventative plan for wellness. Samuel is also very helpful, and loves to tidy up our playroom!

Fall Means…

Fall means football, flu season, and that last stretch of pleasant weather before winter kicks in. Days are getting shorter, temperatures are getting cooler, and as the holidays approach, it’s a tempting time to slip out of exercise routines and pack on the pounds. Read this short article for some tips on fall wellness.

1. Prioritize Physical Activity

Fresh, crisp air, and beautiful changing leaves can beckon you outside, but the colder weather and shortening days can become barriers to physical activity and exercise.

Take advantage of the sunlight and try exercising outside as much as possible. You’ll get a boost of disease-fighting vitamin D, known as the “sunshine vitamin,” which is harder to come by naturally as winter approaches and the days grow ever shorter. Research shows that it’s easier to focus and concentrate on activities while you’re outdoors, so you may be more likely to keep up with a fitness program if it’s taking place outside.

2. Prevent Sickness

Many people feel that it is almost impossible to avoid getting sick during the autumn and winter months.  Often when you do get sick, your body builds it’s immunity and becomes stronger!

It is possible to keep yourself healthier during the winter months.  Here are some tips to help you keep as healthy as possible:

  • Wash your hands often & cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze/cough
  • Get plenty of sleep to avoid a weakened immune system
  • Eat healthy, fresh foods with vitamins
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Avoid emotional and physically stressful situations

3. Maintain Good Nutrition

Autumn boasts an abundance of delicious fruits and vegetables in season. Take advantage of nutritious seasonal fruits like apples, grapes, persimmons, pears, and cranberries. Leafy greens like chard, kale, mustard greens, and spinach also are at their best in the fall months. Sweet potatoes and winter squash, which are packed with beta-carotene, are available in the autumn months. They can be roasted, pureed, or mashed.

With such a variety in season, eating well as the leaves turn doesn’t have to be a chore. These seasonal fruits and veggies tend to be hearty, filling foods that can satisfy your hunger during colder weather.

4. Stick With It

The hardest part of staying healthy this fall is sticking to a positive routine. Keeping up with physical fitness, keeping an eye on what you eat, and getting enough sleep are all key ways to avoid packing on holiday pounds and succumbing to the next bug making the rounds.

Fall is a busy season. Make it all simpler by getting into a rhythm now. Whether it’s packing lunches or planning a workout regimen, it will be much easier to keep everything organized with a weekly routine that you and your family can stick to.
