April Chiropatients of the Month

Cecilio Hernandez & Maria Reyes have been wonderful patients in our office. Cecilio began coming in 2013 for pain in his lower back and once we got him into great shape, he trusted us enough to bring in his wife and children.

Estrella and Cesar Hernandez joined us in early 2017. They have been progressing well so far and we can’t wait to see them as they continue to grow. Adjustments have been helping them correct their posture and cervical curve.

Can Chiropractic Help With Allergies?

With allergy season in full swing, many people are stocking up on antihistamines and other medications to help them endure the onslaught of symptoms: sneezing, itching, watery eyes and stuffy noses.

For allergy sufferers who don’t want to rely on medications for relief, however, chiropractic care offers a drug-free approach to treating allergy symptoms. Below is a look at why and how chiropractic can help with allergies.

When the irritant is inhaled, eaten or touched, the body produces specific antibodies called immunoglobulin, which trigger the release of histamines. Once released, histamines begin ravaging the body. Blood pressure drops, nearby blood vessels dilate, and the spaces between surrounding cells fill with fluid.

This inflammatory response launches a cascade of miserable symptoms, from itching and sneezing to nausea and vomiting. When the reaction occurs across the entire body, it can even be life threatening.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help

The close relationship between the nervous system and immune system is good news for chiropractic patients. By improving the communication between the brain and spinal cord, chiropractic care can help regulate and coordinate the body’s reaction to allergens.

A Doctor of Chiropractic Can:

Strengthen the immune system. Misalignments in the spine—particularly the neck—can disrupt the brain’s lines of communication with the rest of the body. Irritation in the upper cervical joint, for example, may compromise immunity and amplify allergic symptoms. By manipulating the joints and soft tissue, a chiropractor can restore the body’s alignment and re-open essential pathways between the brain and spine.

Regulate stress hormones. Many allergy sufferers also have weakened adrenal glands, which means their bodies have a harder time moderating allergic reactions. Since the adrenal glands are fed directly by spinal nerves, a properly aligned spine can help regulate the amount of cortisol the body produces. This can help mitigate the severity of allergy symptoms.

Support the respiratory system. Like the immune system, the respiratory system depends on an unimpeded flow of information to and from the brain. Chiropractic care keeps the pathways open, fortifying the respiratory system to better withstand allergic attacks.

Recommend dietary and lifestyle changes. Certain foods and other factors in the environment can either ease or exacerbate allergy symptoms. A doctor of chiropractic can recommend changes that boost the patient’s health and comfort.

By improving communication between the immune, nervous and respiratory systems, chiropractic care can help patients weather allergy season—without relying on medications.

Do You Struggle With Inflammation?

Acute and Chronic Inflammation can be burden for many of the patients we treat at Family First Health Center. Our doctors and team have helped thousands of patients get out of pain naturally and for many of our patients helping them find resources at home through their diet is essential. Today we discuss our top 10 anti-inflammatory foods and spices that we have seen amazing results with!

To start, numerous spices and herbs contain a wide variety of antioxidants, minerals and vitamins, and help maximize the nutrient density of your meals. Every time you flavor your meals with herbs or spices you are literally “upgrading” your food without adding a single calorie. Many studies have also shown that most herbs and some spices tend to have unique medicinal qualities.

Three Spices that Pack a Powerful Anti-Inflammatory Punch
1. Cloves
2. Ginger
3. Turmeric

Top 7 Anti-Inflammatory Foods
1. Animal Based Omega-3 Fats
2. Leafy Greens
3. Blueberries
4. Tea
5. Fermented Vegetables
6. Shiitake Mushrooms
7. Garlic

The running thread linking a wide variety of common health problems—from obesity and diabetes to heart disease and cancer—is chronic inflammation. The key to reducing chronic inflammation in your body starts with your diet, and being liberal in your use of high-quality herbs and spices is one simple way to boost the quality of your food. They’re an inexpensive “secret weapon” that just about everyone can take advantage of. Spicing up your meals is not enough, however, if processed foods comprise the bulk of your diet.

It’s important to realize that dietary components can either prevent ortrigger inflammation from taking root in your body, and processed foods do the latter, courtesy of pro-inflammatory ingredients like high fructose corn syrup, soy, processed vegetable oils (trans fats), and other chemical additives.

Cardiovascular Health & Chiropractic Care

There are several ways to lower the risks of heart attack, cardiovascular disease, blood vessel diseases, and stroke. Although it is important to watch the kind of food that goes into the body, many studies have shown that it may be equally as important to pay attention to the timing of meals. Here are four ways to boost cardiovascular health:

1. Meal Planning.
According to a statement released by the American Heart Association, planning the meals and snacks that you have throughout the day can help lower the risks of cardiovascular disease. This is due to the metabolic rates of the body throughout the day.

2. Eating Breakfast Daily.
Several studies have found correlations between increased cardiovascular health and people who consume breakfast regularly. There is a much lower risk of high cholesterol and high blood pressure associated with those who consume breakfast daily.

3. Lowering Food Consumption in the Evening.
At night it is harder for the body to digest and process various foods. Many studies have shown that this may be due to a decreased metabolic rate in the evening. For this reason, lowering the amount of food eaten in the evening can lead to better cardiovascular health.

4. Visiting your Chiropractor Regularly
As many of you know, chiropractic can help other things besides neck and back pain. It helps the body function at its highest potential and if a part of your spinal cord is “blocking the flow” to your heart you can suffer from many different heart issues such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and much more. Talk to one of our doctor’s today about how chiropractic can help with your cardiovascular health and start living to your full potential!

Using these methods to carefully plan meals and snacks for each day can help reduce the many risk factors surrounding cardiovascular disease including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, and insulin complications such as insulin resistance.
